Gas densityGas density
Breathing gas density at selected depth.
Gas density is one of the key limits for deep diving. Thick gas increases breathing effort and the risk of CO₂ retention, especially when working hard.
How it works
ρ = (1.429 × FO₂ + 1.250 × FN₂ + 0.179 × FHe) × (depth ÷ 10 + 1)
- Green below 5.2 g/L
- Orange 5.2 g/L or more, above the recommended maximum
- Red 6.2 g/L or more, the hard limit
Example
- Gas
- Tx 21/10
- Depth
- 40 m (5 bar)
- Density
- 1.180 × 5 = 5.90 g/L
How it works
ρ = (1.429 × FO₂ + 1.250 × FN₂ + 0.179 × FHe) × (depth ÷ 32.8 + 1)
- Green below 5.2 g/L
- Orange 5.2 g/L or more, above the recommended maximum
- Red 6.2 g/L or more, the hard limit
Example
- Gas
- Tx 21/10
- Depth
- 120 ft (4.66 bar)
- Density
- 1.180 × 4.66 = 5.50 g/L
