EADEquivalent Air Depth
Equivalent Air Depth of breathing nitrox is a depth with the same nitrogen partial pressure as if breathing air.
Nitrox carries less nitrogen than air, so you load less of it at the same depth. EAD converts a nitrox dive into the air depth with the same nitrogen exposure.
How it works
EAD = (depth + 10) × FN₂ ÷ 0.79 − 10
- FN₂ nitrogen fraction of the gas (1 − FO₂)
- 0.79 nitrogen fraction of air
Example
- Gas
- Nitrox 32 (68 % N₂)
- Depth
- 40 m
- EAD
- 50 × 0.68 ÷ 0.79 − 10 = 33.0 → 33 m
How it works
EAD = (depth + 32.8) × FN₂ ÷ 0.79 − 32.8
- FN₂ nitrogen fraction of the gas (1 − FO₂)
- 0.79 nitrogen fraction of air
Example
- Gas
- Nitrox 32 (68 % N₂)
- Depth
- 120 ft
- EAD
- 152.8 × 0.68 ÷ 0.79 − 32.8 ≈ 98 ft
